UK Hiking Guide: Easy First Mountains, Real Challenges and the Three Peaks

By WorkWithJoe Editorial · Updated July 20, 2026

“Hiking in England” — and the UK generally — is really three questions: where do beginners start, where do fit walkers go for a proper challenge, and what’s the deal with the Three Peaks? One guide, all three.

Easy mountains to start on

Hill Where Time Why it’s the right start
Catbells (451m) Lake District 2–3h A real mountain ridge in miniature, path all the way
Mam Tor (517m) Peak District 2–3h Paved ridge, castles-in-the-air views over Edale
Pen y Fan (886m) Brecon Beacons 3–4h The gateway big hill — broad path from Storey Arms
Loughrigg Fell (335m) Lake District 2–3h Maximum view per unit effort in Britain

Challenging walks for when you’re ready

Helvellyn via Striding Edge (Lakes) — the classic grade-1 scramble, real exposure, earned bragging rights. Tryfan (Snowdonia) — a mountain you climb with hands as much as feet. Scafell Pike from Wasdale — England’s roof, short but relentless. The Yorkshire Three Peaks — Pen-y-ghent, Whernside, Ingleborough: ~24 miles inside 12 hours, the endurance benchmark. And the long-distance royalty: the Coast to Coast and the Pennine Way, for when a day stops being enough.

The National Three Peaks, honestly

Ben Nevis (1,345m), Scafell Pike (978m) and Snowdon (1,085m) inside 24 hours: how hard is it? The walking is within a fit hillwalker’s range — roughly 23 miles and 3,000m of ascent across three mountains — but the challenge is really sleep deprivation plus ~10 hours of driving, which is why it demands a non-walking driver, a summer date for daylight, and honest fitness (train on back-to-back hill days). Many find the 3-mountain, 3-day version a better holiday and a safer one. Either way it’s a magnificent excuse to meet Britain’s three roofs.

Kit that actually matters: boots you’ve broken in, a waterproof shell regardless of forecast, a paper map or downloaded OS layers (summit signal is a rumor), and the Met Office mountain forecast. The fells forgive slow; they don’t forgive cotton.

Weekend bases for all of this: the Lakes itineraries and, for making a road trip of it, Scotland’s west coast.
