Things to Do in Newquay: Surf, Coast Paths and the Grown-Up Version

By WorkWithJoe Editorial · Updated July 20, 2026

Newquay is three towns wearing one name: the UK’s surf capital, a family bucket-and-spade resort, and — increasingly — a food-and-coast-path weekend spot for young adults who’ve outgrown its stag-party reputation. Here’s each version.

The essentials, whoever you are

Fistral Beach is the anchor — the country’s most famous surf beach, with schools that will get a total beginner standing (briefly) in a lesson. The coast path to Watergate Bay (two miles of cliff-top drama) is the best free afternoon in town, and Bedruthan Steps just up the coast — giant sea stacks marching through the surf — is the postcard everyone leaves with. In town, the tiny tidal island with the century-old house on it — Towan’s island — is Newquay’s oddest sight.

For couples

Skip the centre; base toward Pentire headland: morning coffee above Fistral, the Gannel estuary crossing at low tide (a genuinely lovely walk to Crantock’s dunes), sunset at Lewinnick Cove’s clifftop, and dinner at Watergate Bay where the food scene has grown up properly. Add a surf lesson together — shared incompetence is romantic.

For young adults

Surf mornings at Fistral or Towan, the independent cafés around town, coasteering with a licensed operator (Newquay pioneered the sport — leaping off sea cliffs into deep water, wetsuit and helmet on, guides mandatory), beach evenings at Watergate where permitted, and the summer live-music calendar around Fistral. It’s a better version of the town than its old reputation — cheaper off-season, too (the off-season playbook).

Days out within 30 minutes: Padstow via the Camel Trail bike path from Wadebridge (guide here), Trerice’s Elizabethan manor for a rainy morning, and Holywell Bay’s dunes — the Poldark one.

FAQ

What are the best things to do in Newquay? Fistral Beach and a surf lesson, the coast path to Watergate Bay, Bedruthan Steps’ sea stacks, the Gannel estuary walk to Crantock, and coasteering with a licensed operator.

Is Newquay good for couples? Yes, if you base toward Pentire headland: Fistral sunsets, the Gannel crossing, Lewinnick Cove and Watergate Bay’s grown-up food scene — a different town from its stag reputation.

What is coasteering? Traversing sea cliffs by climbing, scrambling and jumping into deep water — pioneered in UK surf towns and offered in Newquay by licensed operators with wetsuits, helmets and guides. Never DIY it.
